Winter Has Arrived

Following the previous COVID lockdown in Victoria, a once in 100 years storm has swept through central Victoria. The extreme winds damaged houses, blew down century-old trees, powerlines fell, and our water supply was compromised. We are thankful for the many SES members and other volunteers who helped everyone in need.

Winter has arrived! Silver bare tree branches, smoky plumes escaping chimneys, and frost bordering our windows: these are the shades of grey for winter.

A neutral palette of slate, charcoal and platinum misty fogs make their way indoors. Other neutral colours of sage, stone and earth appear on ceramics, textiles and furniture. Winter colours of plum and navy, and textures of leather, velvet, wool and faux fur also emerge.

While draft excluders and thick curtains help insulate our homes, flickering flames from candles and open fires help create the comfort we crave in winter. Fragrances are also important, filling the room, their scents reminding us of holidays.

The bedroom changes its role, forming a mental and physical refuge. I’ve switched my summer bed linen to flannelette sheets and a thicker duvet, with a warm woollen blanket spread over the bed and a throw tossed nonchalantly over the corner.

Winter decorating is all about cosying up your home. More than ever, our home has become a sanctuary. Hard floor surfaces of tiles, concrete and wood need thick floor rugs to insulate from the cold.

I move furniture away from the walls, so that my sofa group closely embraces the fireplace. Favourite winter whites including textured cushions and a folded throw rug are placed on a leather armchair and upholstered sofas.

I like the contrast of knobbly fabrics, grass wallpaper and white ceramics on a sideboard made from recycled timbers.
