It’s Time to Talk About Cushions

The humble cushion is one of the most controversial topics in design and decor, provoking many arguments and much frustration!

Some people view cushions as being totally unnecessary: unable to see the value cushions provide, they push cushions off the sofa, armchair or beds onto the floor.

Cushions are perfect to link together different decor elements in a space, and are an inexpensive way to update your room. They come in all shapes and sizes, adding support and comfort wherever they are placed. The filling used in a cushion determines the degree of comfort. Inserts are generally made of either a feather or polyester filling. Being pliable, these materials adjust, providing another layer of support by filling any gaps between your body and the furniture structure.

Feather inserts need be plumped and pushed, moving the feathers to give a neat and fresh appearance. Picture the servants in the TV series Downton Abbey, picking up cushions, punching, then dropping them on the floor to straighten and fluff them up. Although new feather inserts can be pricey, they can last a lifetime.

Polyester inserts are more affordable and are especially suitable for people with allergies. Try to get a crumbled polyester insert; unlike a pad insert, they are stronger and emulate the qualities of feather inserts. Unfortunately, polyester compacts over time, often ending up as flat as a pancake and outliving its usefulness. You do not need to retain the inserts provided with a purchased cushion!

Swapping over to a fuller insert can improve dramatically the appearance of a cushion.

Some people like to use a karate chopping motion to push in the topmost edge of the cushion, giving a relaxed appearance. To chop, or not to chop: it’s a personal choice!

Having talked about the inside of a cushion, it’s time to consider the outside. My key advice to clients choosing cushions is this: the best cushion displays are a combination of size, colour, texture and shape.

In addition to ready-made cushions available from shops, having cushions custom-made gives great results. As relatively small pieces of fabric are used, you can use more dramatic and luxurious fabrics which would be prohibitively expensive if used for drapes or upholstery.

Have fun mixing your colours, materials and patterns; throw cushions are decorative and punch high above their weight!
